How do I evaluate a generator BEFORE I purchase it?

We would like to get a generator for power outages to run our water pump, frige and freezers.... how do we know how to evaluate one to run amply and also not use too much gas? They have info on it, but we don't know how to interpret the info. What should we be looking for? How do we interpret what the info means? etc. Thanks.
